NAIS Update

The Animal Identification Sheep Working Group of the ASI met in June at Kansas City,MO under the direction of Cindy Wolf, DVM. The primary focus was to review current research on identification devices (microchips, tags, tattoos, etc) that might be recommended to use for the NAIS for sheep.  The American Sheep Industy supports the NAIS as long as the plan is economical and workable ; and at this time feels that there is no advantage to implementing a new identification system over the one currently in place for the National Scrapie Identification Program (tags with premise ID) which has proven itself to be the most effective in animal agriculture to date.  Note: all HMFF sheep and goats that leave the farm are tagged with an official scrapie tag or are tattoo'd per National Scrapie Eradication Guidelines.
