To Keep Flies Down in the
Rabbitry
Have you ever noticed the fly larvae that go crazy in the rabbit
manure? Flies can transmit disease and pester your poor bunnies especially
around the eyes when the weather is hot . Put vanilla in the drinking water at a
rate of 1 teaspoon per gallon... it seems to neutralize the smell of the urine
and feces that attracts the flies. I think I am going to try this in my 55
gallon drum water system.
Cleaning Water Bottles
I used to take all the water bottles and soak them in bleach-water... then
scrub with a bottle brush. Here is perhaps a better idea: put a heaping
tablespoon of that rust remover stuff that you put in water softeners in a
bucket of warm water. Let the bottles soak about 5 minutes and take them out...
they look brand new! No scrubbing... no nasty looking bottles.
For "Dandruff" in the wool
coat
What may look like dandruff, may actually be wool mites. A good cat
flea powder will work, but if you have more than 1 or 2 rabbits you may want to
try using Ivomec. Ivomec is a very safe wormer used on a wide range of
livestock (ask your vet for recommendations). Share a bottle with another
breeder if it is too pricey for you. Breeders recommend 1/4 to 1/2 of a
cc, depending on the size of the rabbit, but less might also work. The label
recommended cattle dose (or sheep/goat) is 1cc per 110 pounds! It
can be used orally, topically (between the shoulder blades), or injected .
If you see the "dandruff" in one rabbit , you might as well do them all
