Foot and Mouth Survey
The
Center for Animal Disease Modeling and Surveillance (CADMS) at the UC
Davis
School of Veterinary Medicine is developing a simulation model to
predict the
spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the event of an
outbreak in the United
States, and they are asking for assistance from the
sheep industry.
The goal of the project is to be able to identify the best
strategies that
would minimize the impact and the cost to the livestock
industry of a FMD
epidemic through use of computer models. They are gathering
date in two areas:
animal movement and premise location.
Producers who are
willing to participate in the survey can go to
http://survey.euro.confirmit.com/wix/p34177541.aspx. All
information will be
kept confidential and will only be used for modeling
purposes.
I participated in the survey and
it was interesting. Ongoing tabulations are provided for you to
see.
Total Sheep and Lamb Inventory Down 1
Percent
All sheep and lamb inventory in the
United States on January 1,
2007, totaled 6.19 million head, down 1 percent
from 2006, but
still 1 percent above 2005. After two consecutive year to
year
increases inventory growth was hampered by extremely dry weather
in
the Southwestern part of the United States. ...
I think this may also
have something to do with the EWE LAMB RETENTION program which offered monetary
incentives to keep ewe lambs for those two years and then was not offered last
year.
Zenport Hoof Trimmers for
Sale
I like these so well, I bought a couple extra for my farm
friends ! 7.5" long hoof trimmers for trimming goat, sheep and llama
hooves. Manufactured by Zenport. This tool is so sharp it will actually cut a
coin in half. Blades are made of hardened carbon steel which keeps the blades
ultra-sharp. Easy-grip handles and a safety lock. Tool is brand new and
comes in a blister pack. Looks almost identical to Shear Magic trimmers, except
it is GREEN and at about half the price. $10.00 plus shipping.
I will be posting them to my ebay store, but thought I would offer them to
you first.
THANKS to Kim of Iowa and Sarah of Kansas for purchasing
sheep last month. May they do well for
you!
SHEEP SHEARING
