HMFF Sheep and Wool

from our customers: I got the samples yesterday, and washed up the wool from Raven. It's gorgeous, and finer than I thought it would be. It's really lovely. I haven't gotten the
kid mohair washed yet, but it looks lovely too. I am really looking forward to
getting them back from the processor. Thanks again.  - Kathy in Mo

I've never had such  beautiful fleece in my hands!  I was so excited when I
realized what had arrived.  My brother was visiting & gave me a hard time
jokingly, (enjoying my pure pleasure) because I couldn't put them down...You're beautiful fleeces are magnificent!  Pamela in IL

Just wanted you to know that this wool is absolutely beautiful! I washed it and
love it!  The strong buck mohair turned out very nice too.  Great long locks and
softer when washed.  Thank you!  R&L in CA

a comparison of Border Leicester... Hybrid Leicester ....and Bluefaced Leicester

A note on the different Leicester types available at HMFF:

Border Leicesters: these are my IMPROVED Border Leicesters (no scratchy or coarse wools)... selected for years for a softer and LONG stapled fleece. Uniform character. Clean faces and legs that make shearing a breeze. Last year I sold off half of my adult Border ewes, so will not have any fullblood Border ewe lambs for sale this year (I need them for replacements) but have two high percentage ewe lambs on offer which should be gorgeous.

Hybrid Leicesters: These are a 50/50 cross between Border and Bluefaced Leicester and produce my most spectacular fleeces... both fine and long with great luster. These fleeces sell as fast as I can put them on ebay and the sheep have that wonderful hybrid vigor ! If I was smart I would keep a flock of Hybrid wethers...

Bluefaced Leicesters: These are relatively new to HMFF and are a work in progress. They are a rare (and expensive) breed and have a small gene pool in the U.S. with genetic defects popping up from time to time (entropion and mouth problems). On the plus side they tend to be quite large and long bodied with a super fine purled lock fleece that is soft enough to blend even with bunny!  They are an advantageous cross on just about any breed (meat OR wool types) adding size, vigor and fleece quality. In the U.K. they are considered a meat breed!  I cross them onto my Border Leicesters to achieve the spectacular Hybrid Leicesters. I will probably not have any fullblood BFL lambs for sale for a few years, until I achieve a stronger base and weed out the health issues... but I do have a high percentage ram lamb on offer this year that I feel pretty darn good about. If you have been thinking about getting BFL genetics into your flock (for a fraction of the cost of a fullblood) read on!
