Seasons Bleatings - May2008 - SHEEP
HMFF Leicester
Sheep!
HMFF sheep and goats
enjoying the new pasture
I have 50 plus sheep and need to
cut it down to about 30... so I am going to offer quite a few sheep this
year. Herd reduction sales are the best time to buy from established
breeders, because you know that there will be alot of nice breeding stock
available. It is a painful decision, but a necessary one for me. The list is
long, so individual photos (in the interest of download time) will be upon
request. All will be shorn (except lambs),
vaccinated , wormed and feet trimmed before leaving. All will be scrapie tagged
and come with a 5 generation pedigree.
Bluefaced Leicester (registered with
BLUNA) a RAREBREED in the U.S. and the finest fiber
diameter of all the Leicester breeds. In the U.K.
they are used as a crossing sire for meat sheep and
contribute large size , length of loin and multiplicity. Color
is extremely rare in BFLs and it was only in the last couple years, that colored
semen was available by import from the U.K. Quiet disposition. Good
mothers / lots of milk. Rams are non-aggressive and gentlemanly. Clean
faces, legs and bellies... easy to shear.

bred to color... so carries the recessive black gene. She was tested OPP
negative in 2005, when I bought her. $350 SOLD

A Handspinners
Flock - wethers are the ideal spinners
flock... you can get assorted breeds to suit your desires without
worrying about them crossbreeding into something no one wants. No
worrying about frozen newborn lambs. They do nothing but eat
grass and put it all into growing gorgeous fleeces... in
fact, better fleeces than either rams or ewes! Most
of the 2008 ram lambs, if not sold as rams this month, will be wethered so
I can retain them if they don't sell as lambs. I won't send them to
market... they are just too valuable. At a return of
$16-18 per lb raw fleece, a wether will have paid for himself
within one and a half years!
SAVING MONEY
TIP: Put your money into fencing ,
instead of lawnmower gas or tractor fuel, and let that glut of summer grass grow
saleable fleeces for you! If you already have fencing, put in
cross-fencing so you can rotate pastures and graze most of the year... that will
save on winter feed costs.
