And lastly, this bit of fun:

From those crazy Norsemen comes this mythological figure: Heimdall- with hearing so acute he could hear the wool growing on a sheep!  The names below might be good names for a guard dog.

Heimdall is the god of light and watchman of the gods He guards Bifrost , the only entrance to Asgard , the realm of the Scandinavian gods.  He requires less sleep than a bird and can see a hundred miles around him, by night as well as by day. His hearing is so accurate that no sound escapes him: he can even hear the grass grow or the wool on a sheep's back.

[and he has a swell HAT]

Heimdall's nickname Hallinskíði ("Bent Stick") also appears as a kenning for "ram", perhaps referring to the bent horns on a ram's head. Heimdall's nickname Gullintanni ("Golden-Toothed") would refer to the yellow coloring found in the teeth of old rams.

Heimdall was said to have been born from nine mothers...and was raised on seawater and boars blood. According to Welsh folklore waves come in sets of nine with the ninth one being the ram and the first eight being the sheep (ewes).Old Welsh practice, modern French practice and modern Basque practice is to refer to white-capped waves as sheep.
